Friendly support is on offer for Disabled people and those living with long-term health conditions looking to join a new club or community group in 2026.
Disability Together runs the Disability Ambassador scheme as part of a National Lottery funded wellbeing project designed to reduce isolation, improve confidence, and help Disabled people and those with long-term health conditions take part in community life.
The scheme supports individuals who want to join local groups, activities, or clubs but may feel unsure about taking that first step. Referrals can be made directly by the individual themselves, family members, or healthcare professionals.
Each person is carefully matched with a trained volunteer Disability Ambassador from their local area. These ambassadors offer a warm welcome, practical support, and reassurance during those first sessions. Both the Volunteer Ambassador and the new participant are given all the information they need to make the experience comfortable and positive.
The goal is to help people feel confident, connected, and able to continue independently in a new group or activity they enjoy.
The scheme works with a range of groups across the region online and in-person. Whether it’s yoga, sporting activities, hobbies or crafts – new groups are joining all the time. If someone has a particular interest and there isn’t a group listed locally, we’ll work to find something suitable.
Disability Together’s Volunteer and Community Lead, Carolyn, said:
“This opportunity is about people supporting people. A familiar face, a bit of encouragement, and the right information can make all the difference when someone is trying something new. Our volunteer Disability Ambassadors do a wonderful job in the community and are the perfect people to make new starters feel at home.
If 2026 is the year you’d like to meet new people and start something new we’d love to hear from you.”
