This week, from 2 to 8 February, is Tinnitus Week 2026.
Tinnitus Week is a chance to raise awareness of tinnitus and to support people who live with it. Tinnitus is when you hear sounds like ringing, buzzing or other noises in your ears or head, even though there is no sound around you.
During Tinnitus Week this year, Tinnitus UK will be sharing new research about tinnitus care in the UK.
A few helpful things to know about tinnitus:
Jan, one of Disability Together’s sight and hearing specialists, explains some of the symptoms of tinnitus and ways to help managing the condition.Â
Tinnitus is often caused by damage in the inner ear. The brain receives signals, even though there is no external noise.
The sound can be different for everyone. It might be ringing or buzzing, but it can also sound musical or like voices.
Stress and tiredness can make tinnitus feel worse. Focusing on the noise or listening out for it can also increase it.
Tinnitus can seem worse at night because there are fewer other sounds to focus on.
Distraction can help. Background noise or gentle sounds can stop the brain focusing on the internal noise.
Wearing hearing aids can help by bringing in more external sound. Some hearing aids can also have white noise added for quiet places, such as at work.
