When Loxie Chiles’s outdoorsy, fun-loving grandpa caught Covid, he developed pulmonary fibrosis and was told he had only weeks to live. He fought hard, came home from hospital in the new year and now relies on oxygen all the time. Life changed for the whole family.
Because he loved walking, the family looked for ways to keep him close to the countryside he missed. They discovered local wildlife trusts working with Disability Together’s Countryside Mobility scheme to provide Trampers for people who can’t walk independently or who live with long-term conditions. Using a Tramper gave him something precious back – the freedom to be outdoors, together. As Loxie puts it, “Trampers have given him a new lease of life and freedom.”
To say thank you, Loxie dedicated her London Half Marathon run on 1 September to him and to the charity that helped create those treasured memories. Friends, family and online supporters rallied behind her story, and she raised an amazing £2,585 to help fund Trampers and other accessibility support for Disabled and d/Deaf people.
We’re hugely grateful to Loxie and everyone who donated. Your generosity helps more families enjoy the same simple joy of being out in nature.
