Disability Together is proud to support International Week of Deaf People 2026, which this year takes place from 21 September to 27 September.
This historic week was launched by the World Federation of the Deaf in 1958, and is celebrated each year on the last week of September.
International Day of Sign Languages runs parallel to this on 23 September; this year’s theme for both awareness events is ‘Declaring Deaf people’s human rights’.
According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are over 70 million Deaf people and more than 300 different sign languages worldwide. Therefore, it is an essential human right for the Deaf community to have equal opportunities to those who use spoken languages, and that the use and learning of sign language is encouraged.
Here at Disability Together we are proud to support Devon’s Deaf community. Our Deaf Wellbeing service is a Deaf-led programme that brings tother British Sign Language (BSL) users for friendship, social connection and practical wellbeing support.
This means supporting and providing
- Deaf wellbeing services
- Deaf-led counselling
- Signposting to useful services, and including Deaf people in discussions that help shape the accessibility of Devon’s services.
Recent activities include craft groups and guided wellbeing walks and activities.
